
A load of firewood can look clean, be correctly sized, and still perform poorly because it carries too much water. For commercial buyers, the answer to what moisture content for firewood is not a minor product detail. It affects usable heat, smoke output, storage time, customer complaints, transport weight, and the consistency of every delivery.
For most residential stoves, fireplaces, and commercial solid-fuel heating applications, firewood should be supplied at 20% moisture content or below, measured on a dry, freshly split face of the log. Many buyers prefer a working specification of 15% to 20%. This range provides reliable ignition, efficient combustion, and a practical balance between drying cost and fuel value.
The standard procurement target is simple: seasoned or kiln-dried firewood at 20% moisture content maximum. At this level, wood burns with a stable flame and releases more of its energy as heat rather than using that energy to evaporate water.
Firewood above 25% moisture is generally too wet for efficient use. It can be difficult to light, may hiss or steam in the fire, and creates more smoke. Wet wood also reduces the operating efficiency of wood stoves and boilers. For a reseller or facility operator, this often means more fuel is consumed to achieve the same heat demand.
Wood at 15% to 20% moisture is a dependable specification for most markets. Kiln-dried firewood may be supplied closer to 10% to 15%, depending on species, log dimensions, drying process, and packing requirements. Lower moisture is not automatically better in every commercial situation. Very dry wood can cost more to produce, requires protected storage, and may burn faster in some appliances. The right target depends on the end user's equipment and the value placed on immediate usability.
Fresh-cut timber contains a large volume of natural water. Before the wood can burn efficiently, that water must be heated and driven off. Every unit of energy used for evaporation is energy that does not heat a building, workshop, or hospitality property.
High-moisture logs produce several operational problems. They are heavier to transport, which can increase freight cost per unit of usable energy. They can also generate excessive smoke and leave more deposits in flues and chimneys. In enclosed heating equipment, incomplete combustion may contribute to dirty glass, reduced air flow, and more frequent maintenance.
Dry firewood gives buyers a clearer fuel proposition. It lights faster, burns more predictably, and provides a stronger visible flame. For distributors, this makes product claims easier to support and helps reduce disputes caused by poor customer experience. For institutional users, it supports more consistent heating output and better fuel planning through the season.
Moisture content should not be confused with wood species. Dense hardwoods such as oak, ash, hornbeam, and beech can provide long burn times and strong heat output when properly dried. But even a high-value hardwood will perform badly if delivered wet. Species, log size, and moisture must be considered together.
A handheld moisture meter is the practical tool for receiving checks, warehouse inspection, and supplier quality control. However, a meter reading is only useful when the test is performed correctly.
Do not measure only the outer bark or the weathered end of a log. Those surfaces dry first and can give a misleadingly low result. Split a representative log through the center, then insert the meter probes into the newly exposed internal face. Test several pieces from different areas of the pallet, crate, truckload, or container.
For bulk procurement, a single reading is not enough. Moisture can vary between the outer and inner parts of a load, especially where wood has been stored outdoors or packed before it was fully dry. A receiving procedure should define the sample size, the meter type, where logs are selected, and the acceptable range. This makes inspection repeatable for both supplier and buyer.
Meter readings can also vary by wood density and instrument settings. Procurement teams should confirm that the meter is suitable for firewood testing and that its species correction settings are used where applicable. The goal is not a perfect laboratory result on every log. The goal is a consistent method that identifies whether the shipment meets the agreed specification.
Seasoned firewood dries naturally through time, air circulation, and proper stacking. Depending on species, log thickness, climate, and storage conditions, this process can take many months or longer. It can be economical, but natural drying is less predictable when weather conditions change or when stacks are poorly ventilated.
Kiln-dried firewood is processed under controlled heat and air flow to reach a defined moisture target more consistently. It is usually the better option for export buyers, retail packs, hospitality customers, and resellers who need fuel ready for immediate use. Controlled drying also supports uniformity across larger volumes.
The trade-off is cost. Kiln drying requires energy, equipment, labor, and careful handling after drying. For buyers serving price-sensitive markets, well-seasoned firewood at verified 20% moisture may be the better commercial choice. For buyers selling premium, ready-to-burn products, kiln-dried wood can justify a higher price through convenience and dependable performance.
Product descriptions should state more than “dry firewood.” A usable commercial specification includes wood species or mix, log length, split size, packaging format, moisture target, inspection method, and delivery terms. This reduces ambiguity before loading and helps distributors sell with confidence.
Firewood that leaves a supplier at 20% moisture can absorb water again if stored incorrectly. This is particularly relevant for importers receiving containers, wholesalers holding stock, and retailers displaying bagged logs outdoors.
The storage objective is to keep rain off the wood while allowing air to move around it. Firewood should be elevated from wet ground, stacked with ventilation gaps, and protected by a roof or breathable cover. Fully wrapping loose logs in non-breathable plastic can trap condensation, especially when temperatures change.
Covered crates, ventilated bags, and dry warehouse space help preserve the condition achieved during seasoning or kiln drying. If wood is stored in an enclosed area, adequate air circulation remains necessary. A dry-looking warehouse can still create problems if damp floors, leaks, or poor ventilation allow moisture to build up.
For container shipments, loading conditions matter as much as warehouse conditions. Wood must be dry before packing. If damp material is sealed into a container, moisture can migrate within the load during transit. Clear packing procedures, dry loading areas, and documented pre-shipment checks help protect product quality on arrival.
A moisture requirement should appear clearly in the purchase order or supply agreement. “Seasoned firewood” is a description, not a complete quality standard. Buyers should specify whether the maximum moisture applies to every sampled log, an average test result, or a defined percentage of the shipment.
A practical bulk specification can require firewood with moisture content not exceeding 20%, tested on freshly split internal surfaces using a calibrated handheld meter. It should also state the agreed sampling process and what happens if the delivery does not meet the specification. These details are especially useful when product moves through multiple warehouses, ports, and distribution partners.
Buyers should also consider the destination market. A dry product shipped into a humid climate needs suitable packaging and storage instructions. A customer using open fireplaces may accept a different log mix than a customer operating high-efficiency stoves or biomass boilers. Matching the fuel specification to the actual appliance avoids unnecessary cost and prevents performance issues.
